Getting into a car accident can be a desperate situation, no matter how many years you’ve been driving around in your car. We caught ourselves worried about the car, about our health and about the other car and driver. It’s just a whole lot of trouble we didn’t ask for that day and it can make us super stressed. We know. Pardon our french, but it’s a shitty situation.
Since it may be hard to think when in a car accident, we decide to give you this quick reminder on what exactly you should immediately do after it happens. Breath in, breath out, and do it:
STOP THE CAR
We know it might sound quite obvious, but we don’t know what is gonna be our reaction in an accident until it happens, so you must remember this: stop the car. You must stop and see what happened to you, to your property and also help the other driver. It is stressing, it is an anxious situation, but you need to do it.
After being sure you and your passenger are ok and after stopping your car, move it to the sidewalk or the side of the road, if you can. If your car is in a real bad condition, then:
GET YOUR EMERGENCY KIT
And by this we mean the emergency car kit. Turn your hazard lights on and use a road flare to make sure all the other cars will slow down and won’t cause another collision.
TAKE PICTURES AND EXCHANGE INFORMATION
It is important to get all information from the other driver you can. So, ask for their name and contact info as well as their insurance and policy number. We also encourage you to take pictures of the accident and specific ones of the damages caused in both cars. You should also get one with the license plate, just to make sure.
CALL THE POLICE 911
is your best friend. Doesn’t matter if it’s a huge or a small collision, you need to call the police to make a report. It’s important to your safety, and most of car insurances will ask for it when you file a claim. So, when police arrives, remember to tell things exactly as
they happened. If you’re not sure about something, say exactly that you’re not sure. Never make assumptions. After that, ask policeman where you can get your report copy. It’s also important to get cause, you know, your insurance will need it.
Just like Hammer time, this is the Insurance time. You should do this right after calling 911, this way your company will be able to explain exactly all the information needed to file a claim and what you should expect from that process. If you are injured and you have medpay, you should ask for it too. If not, go to your personal health insurance, but don’t forget to see a doctor.
This would be our recommendations when in a car accident. We know it’s the basics and it might seem obvious when you read it, but we lose our minds in those situations and a friendly reminder is always a good call, right? But indeed, we hope you won’t need it!
